Learning Objectives

Build the Foundation During the First 16 Weeks

The first weeks of puppy ownership are an important time for establishing the routines, expectations, communication, and habits that will continue developing as your puppy grows. This course is designed to help owners move beyond simply reacting to puppy behaviors and begin thinking proactively, anticipating needs, creating structure, and using everyday activities as opportunities to teach.

Rather than viewing training as something that happens only during a formal session, you’ll learn how mealtimes, potty breaks, crate time, play, rest, engagement, and daily routines can all become part of your puppy’s education.

What Will You Learn?

  • Establish a practical daily puppy routine that balances training, activity, engagement, potty breaks, meals, crate time, and appropriate rest.
  • Introduce foundational basic obedience skills through short, age-appropriate training sessions.
  • Use your puppy’s mealtimes as training opportunities to practice focus, food luring, Wait, Sit, Down, Heel, and other beginning skills.
  • Develop a consistent approach to potty training by anticipating when your puppy needs to go and immediately reinforcing successful elimination.
  • Introduce the crate as a positive, structured part of your puppy’s routine while encouraging appropriate rest and independence.
  • Build engagement, communication, and trust through play, rewards, handling, and intentional interaction.
  • Incorporate mental stimulation and enrichment through search activities, puzzles, snuffle mats, crate games, Place, Recall, Stay, and other exercises.
  • Understand why puppies need a balance between physical activity, mental stimulation, training, and rest.
  • Begin introducing your puppy to new environments and experiences as part of their ongoing socialization and development.
  • Recognize opportunities throughout the day to reinforce the behaviors you want rather than waiting for unwanted behaviors to occur.
